Pebbles in a Stream

Gayla Masterson, eldest daughter to an ever-absent widow, is heartbroken: her fiance, Amrid, has run off with another woman–a girl, really, of only seventeen, named Cherie Palmer–leaving nothing but a simple note as a farewell.

Just as Gayla sweeps the ashes of her heart under a rug, an angry Mr. Palmer comes along with questionable motives, demanding that Gayla bring his daughter home. When Daniel, her younger sister’s beau, brings to light a less-than-honorable deal between Mr. Palmer and a neighboring farmer, Gayla must make quick decisions and take careful steps to assure her family’s safety, all while keeping her own feelings for Amrid and Cherie at bay. With Daniel’s help, along with the assistance of a few other unlikely comrades, Gayla eventually comes to understand Mr. Palmer’s true motive, hidden in the recesses of the land’s history, and has to do some real digging to figure out how to negotiate her, and her family, out of a messy situation.
